Why We This Love Matcha

Organic Matcha is the healthiest and most potent form of tea. It is an ancient Japanese superfood steeped in tradition. Matcha is used by Japanese Zen Buddhist monks as a means to relax and meditate while remaining alert because it contains a high amount of the amino acid L-Theanine. By consuming the whole powdered leaf, rather than steeping and discarding leaves, you get the highest concentration of antioxidants and nutrients available from the tea plant.*

How much caffeine does Matcha tea contain?

Matcha tea roughly contains about 25mg of caffeine per teaspoon. This is approximately 1/3rd the content found in regular brewed coffee. So, where coffee tends to make you jittery, Matcha leaves you with a clearer head. The reason behind this phenomenon is that Matcha caffeine content is small enough to be well-tolerated by most people. Additionally, the caffeine in Matcha is balanced by other ‘good’ compounds it which enable a slower release of caffeine. So you don’t get a ‘caffeine kick’ with Matcha as you do with coffee. In fact, the small amount of caffeine contained in matcha takes nearly 3-4 hours to be absorbed completely into the bloodstream! Due to this slow release, you feel fresh plant-based superfood and rejuvenated for hours with just one cup of Matcha.

Here is a brief comparison of caffeine in matcha with that in other popular beverages:

Comparative caffeine in different beverages

  • 1 tsp of Matcha (1 gram approximately) has about 25-30 mg of Caffeine.
  • 1 cup of brewed coffee about 150-200 mg of coffee.
  • 1 cup of brewed green tea 35-70 mg of caffeine
  • 1 cup of brewed oolong tea has about 50-75mg of caffeine
  • 1 cup of brewed black tea has 60-90 mg of caffeine

How long will my Matcha last?

Once it’s opened, it really should be used up reasonably quickly, say within a few months, for optimum freshness, color, and taste. Matcha is a raw, unfermented, unroasted form of Camellia sinensis and thus is prone to oxidation. To experience the best in the product (eg. foams when you whisk, etc) it needs to be consumed as soon after opening as possible. It will still be fine months later, especially if it's been refrigerated.

All this is assuming you prepare it as tea. For purposes of a smoothie, protein powder ingredient, dessert, etc, it is less of a concern. It is still safe to consume for many months, even past the best by date but would be ideal for use as an ingredient.

How should I store it?

Matcha should either be stored in the freezer if you plan on NOT opening it for a while, or in the fridge, once it’s opened.
